Your Google Business Profile: the free tool most businesses ignore

There's a free tool that puts your business on the map — literally — right at the top of Google, above the paid ads and the website results. It's your Google Business Profile, and most local businesses set it up once, forget it, and leave money on the table.

Why it matters so much

When someone searches "[your service] near me," the first thing they see is the map and the top three listings. Those listings come straight from Google Business Profiles. No profile, or a half-finished one, and you're simply not in the running — no matter how good your website is.

It also shows your hours, photos, reviews and a one-tap call button. For a huge share of customers, your profile is their first impression. Many never visit your website at all.

The 10-minute setup most people skip

Claim your profile (search your business name on Google, or go to the Business Profile manager) and fill in everything:

  • Primary category — the single most important field. Pick exactly what you are.
  • Accurate hours — including public holidays. Nothing kills trust like turning up to "open" and finding closed.
  • Service area — every suburb you cover, so you appear beyond your home postcode.
  • Services list — spell out what you do, in the words customers use.
  • Real photos — your team, your work, your premises. Profiles with photos get more clicks and calls.

The weekly habit that keeps it working

Setup gets you in the door. Activity keeps you there. Ten minutes a week:

  • Add a post — a recent job, an offer, a seasonal reminder. It signals you're active and trading.
  • Ask for and reply to reviews — every single one, good or bad. Replies show you care and feed the algorithm.
  • Answer questions — the Q&A section is public; get to it before a competitor or a random does.
  • Add a few photos — fresh images of recent work beat a static gallery from two years ago.

It's not complicated. It's just consistent — which is exactly why so many businesses don't do it, and why doing it puts you ahead.
